How the Yankees Got Here
In the Wild Card games, the Yankees put up 18 runs and allowed 2. Ben Rice went deep twice in the 9-0 win in Game 1. Cody Bellinger also had big hits, including a three-run shot in the 9-2 win in Game 2. Cam Schlittler and Max Fried each pitched the Yankees to a win, which kept Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon fully rested for the ALDS.
How the Rays Got Here
Tampa Bay finished the regular season 4.5 games ahead in the American League East. They also earned the top seed, which brought the bye. Manager Kevin Cash had more freedom to set up his pitching. This is Tampa Bay’s first postseason series since 2023. The two teams were nearly even in the regular season, with Tampa Bay taking the series 7-6.
Pitching Matchups
Game 1: Drew Rasmussen (Rays) vs. Gerrit Cole or Carlos Rodon (Yankees)
Cash has confirmed Rasmussen starts Game 1. He went 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA over 30 starts, 172 innings and 174 strikeouts, and he led the AL in WHIP (0.91) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.44). In his last regular-season start he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium and struck out 11 in the Rays’ division-clinching win.
The Yankees have not named a Game 1 starter. Manager Aaron Boone said Cole is lined up and Rodon is very much in play. Against Tampa Bay this season, Cole was 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts, and Rodon was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one start.
Games 2 and 3
Schlittler is in line to start Game 2, and he would also be the Game 5 starter if the series goes the distance. Fried, who posted a 2.80 ERA over 112.2 innings this season and allowed one run on three hits in six innings in the Wild Card Series, is expected to take Game 3 on full rest. The Rays have said more rotation decisions will come as the week goes on.
Key Factors
- Yankees rotation depth: With Cole, Rodon, Schlittler and Fried, New York has an All-Star-caliber arm to counter each Rays starter.
- Rays bullpen: Closer Bryan Baker led the majors with 40 saves, with a 1.49 ERA and 0.91 WHIP, and Kevin Kelly and Cam Booser give Cash reliable late-inning options.
- Power: Rice was the Yankees’ only 20-homer hitter in the regular season, but five others hit more than 15, so the lineup is deep rather than top-heavy.
- Rays strikeouts: Tampa Bay struggled with strikeouts late in the season, which could hurt against high-velocity Yankees arms.
Our Yankees vs Rays ALDS Prediction
Betting markets have this close, with the Yankees as slight favorites at roughly -117 (about 54%) and the Rays at +113. We agree with the Yankees by a hair. Rasmussen gives Tampa Bay the best single starter in Game 1, but New York has more quality starters across five games and arrives with momentum and a rested staff. Pick: Yankees in 5. Odds move quickly, so check a sportsbook for current prices.
