How Kumkum Mohod started archery

She started archery in 2018 at the Radhey Archery Academy in her home town of Amravati with Prafull Dange. In six months, she started her career with a silver medal in the sub-junior nationals using a wooden bow, according to Oneindia. Several outlets describe her family backing her through years of training on modest equipment.

The Asian Games gold, round by round

The individual final in Aichi-Nagoya went to a shoot-off. Open magazine reports that she shot a 10 and Oh Yejin shot an 8. On her way to the final she beat South Korea’s Chaeyoung Kang 6-4 in the quarter-final, Oneindia reports. The win made her the first Indian to win individual recurve gold at the Asian Games, Outlook says.

Three medals in one Games

Alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma she won India’s first-ever women’s recurve team gold at the Asian Games. With Dhiraj Bommadevara she added mixed team silver. India’s archers took nine medals at the Games, five of them gold, Open reports.

What the Olympic quota place means

India’s archers secured Olympic quota places for LA 2028 at the Games. myKhel reports that both finalists in the women’s individual recurve event earned quota places. Quota places are won for the country, not for the individual archer, so Mohod has not personally qualified for the Olympics. Who fills India’s places will be decided later through selection.
